People started settling in the Denver area back in the mid-nineteenth century. Gold and silver discovered in Colorado brought prospectors from California, the east coast, and from many foreign countries. In 1858 gold was discovered in the sands of Cherry Creek. Denver City and Auraria gold camps feeding from the wealth of the Gregory Gulch strikes became the area's main settlements. In 1860 the two communities held a formal meeting and with much pomp and ceremony consolidated into Denver. The name came in honor of the governor of the Kansas territory, James William Denver.
In 1861 the Colorado Territory was created and Denver was incorporated that same year. The railroad arrived in Denver in 1870; Colorado became the Centennial State in 1876 and Denver became its capital. The first city in the west to receive telephone service, Denver was also one of the first four cities in the world to have electric street lights. The elegant residences, parks and tree- lined streets gave the name "Queen City of the Plains" to Denver.
